JEFFERSON CITY---The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved a request filed by the Missouri-American Water Company (MAWC) seeking a certificate of convenience and necessity (CCN) to install, own, acquire, operate and maintain a water and sewer system in and around the City of Orrick, Missouri in Ray County.

MAWC proposes to purchase substantially all of the water and sewer assets of the currently unregulated systems of Orrick, and requested permission, approval and a CCN to own, acquire, construct, operate, manage and maintain the water and sewer systems in an area in and around Orrick, Missouri. To provide service to the proposed area, MAWC states it will purchase the water and sewer systems from Orrick. Orrick serves approximately 335 water and sewer accounts. The residents of Orrick overwhelmingly approved selling the water and sewer system assets to MAWC in an April 6, 2021 election.

The Commission approved the application determining: 1) There is a need for the service; 2) MAWC is qualified to provide the proposed service; 3) MAWC has the financial ability to provide the service; 4) MAWC’s proposal is economically feasible; and 5) The service promotes the public interest.

“Based on the application and Staff’s recommendations, the Commission concludes that the factors for granting a certificate of convenience and necessity to MAWC have been satisfied and that it is in the public’s interest for MAWC to provide water and sewer service to the customers currently served by Orrick,” said the Commission.

MAWC provides water service to approximately 470,000 customers in Missouri. It also provides sewer service to approximately 15,000 customers in the state.
