314 Area Code: The Missouri Commission continues to work with the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) and the telecommunications industry on implementation of an overlay plan and the introduction of a new area code in the 314 area code region in Missouri. The new area code will be 557. All existing 314 area code customers will retain their current area code in the overlay area and their telephone numbers will not be changed. August 12, 2022 is the earliest date telephone numbers with a 557 area code will be activated and used within the 314 area code. The 557 area code will co-exist everywhere in this region with the 314 area code. All local calls within this region must be dialed using ten digits rather than seven digits.

816 Area Code: Network preperation and customer education are scheduled to begin May 10th. The new area code will be 975. All existing 816 area code customers will retain their current area code in the overlay area and their telephone numbers will not be changed. February 10, 2023 is the earliest date telephone numbers with a 975 area code will be activated and used within the 816 area code. The 975 area code will co-exist everywhere in this region with the 816 area code. All local calls within this region must be dialed using ten digits rather than seven digits.

573 Area Code: NANPA has notified the Missouri Commission of the need for relief in the 573 area code in Missouri. The 573 area code will exhaust its available supply of numbers during the first quarter of 2025.

Elimination of 7-digit Local Dialing for 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
On July 16, 2020, the FCC established 988 as the nationwide, easy-to-remember 3-digit dialing code for Americans in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. Report and Order
Timeline for Elimination of 7-Digit Dialing
- In order to accomodate the 988 code 7-digit local dialing will be eliminated in the following Misosuri area codes: 314, 417, 660 and 816. Providers can eliminate 7-digit local dialing any time between October 24, 2021 to July 15, 2022.
- On July 15, 2022 local calls dialed with only 7 digits may not be completed and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. Consumers must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.
- Beginning July 16, 2022 dialing "988" will route calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
