PSC Urges Awareness And Energy Conservation
During Winter Storm Fern
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.---The Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) is urging Missouri energy consumers to stay aware and employ energy conservation methods during Winter Storm Fern. Winter Storm Fern brings snow, ice and frigid temperatures to the Midwest, putting strain on the electric grid.
The Commission maintains regular communication with its regulated utilities and regional grid operators to monitor conditions during winter storms. Regional grid operators consist of a pool of electricity generators and users that cover certain territories within the United States. Missouri is served by two regional grid operators: the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). Grid operators are responsible for monitoring the electric grid in their territories and for working with their associated members by instructing them on what preparations and actions are needed to maintain grid reliability.
During severe winter storms, regional grid operators may ask member utilities to encourage the reduction of energy consumption. In that case, everyone has a role to play. Energy consumers should be alert and look for announcements from their utility concerning the need to reduce energy consumption to the benefit of the entire electric grid.
Consumers can do their part by conserving electricity in some of the following ways:
- Lower your thermostat. Wear additional layers of clothing and use blankets so that you can set the thermostat as low as you can while maintaining comfort.
- Seal openings and cover drafty windows. Cover windows that allow cold air to come in and put blankets or towels down where you see openings under or around doors.
- Unplug non-essential items. Think about what appliances or devices you may have plugged in but are not essential. Unplug those items when not in use.
- Reduce the temperature setting on electric water heaters.
- Ensure furnace filters are clean. Clean furnace filters help ensure maximum efficiency.
For the most up to date information on energy conditions during the winter storm, the PSC recommends working with your local utility.
