Fuel Adjustment Charge to Change for Empire Electric Customers

JEFFERSON CITY---Electric customers of The Empire District Electric Company d/b/a Liberty (Empire) will see a change in the fuel adjustment charge (FAC) on their electric bills effective December 1, 2021.

The change reflects actual energy costs incurred by Empire during the six-month period of March 2021 through August 2021, less an adjustment for what Empire states are “extraordinary costs” associated with the February 2021 cold weather event (Winter Storm Uri). In an earlier case(Case No. ER-2021-0332), Empire sought to defer Winter Storm Uri costs to seek later recovery in rates.

For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (1,000 kilowatt-hours) of electricity a month, the current FAC is $0.00 a month. With this change, the new FAC will be approximately $7.12 a month. If not for the deferral of Winter Storm Uri costs, Empire stated that the monthly bill would increase by approximately $18.07 a month.

Empire serves approximately 155,400 electric customers in the Missouri counties of Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, St. Clair, Stone and Taney.
