JEFFERSON CITY—Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCPL) has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking approval of its decommissioning cost estimate and funding level of its nuclear decommissioning trust fund.

KCPL’s application states that the current contribution of approximately $1.28 million is adequate to meet the cost of decommissioning the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant (KCPL owns 47% of the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant).  KCPL states the current annual contribution amount should not be changed at this time and therefore customer rates should not be affected.  KCPL’s cost estimate to decommission the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant is approximately $593.5 million.

Applications to intervene and participate in this case must be filed no later than October 3, 2008, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102.  Copies of the application should be sent to: Curtis D. KCPL filed the application in compliance with commission rules and regulations which require review of the trust fund accruals and the projected costs of decommissioning every three years.  These reviews are designed to ensure adequate funding for decommissioning of the power plant.

KCPL serves approximately 271,000 electric customers in western Missouri.
