PR-09-146 -- Change In Fuel Adjustment Charge Approved For KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company

Contact: Kevin Kelly (573) 751-9300

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- FEBRUARY 19, 2009

JEFFERSON CITY—To reflect changes in fuel and purchased power costs, the Missouri Public Service Commission has approved a request filed by KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company to adjust the fuel adjustment charge on electric customer bills.  The charge, which appears as a separate item on the monthly bill, is known as the fuel adjustment clause or FAC.

The FAC change reflects fuel and purchased power costs for the six month period of June 2008 through November 2008.  The company cited higher purchased power costs, higher natural gas costs and higher coal and freight costs as reasons for seeking the increase (approximately $6.1 million in the area formerly served by Aquila Networks-L&P and approximately $18.1 million in the area formerly served by Aquila Networks-MPS).  According to the electric company, a typical residential customer’s bill will increase by about $1.00 a month.  The change will take effect March 1, 2009.

KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company provides electric service to approximately 300,000 customers in Missouri.
