FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- JANUARY 16, 2009

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Public Service Commission has joined a national movement with other state and federal policymakers, consumer groups, and civic organizations in the energy efficiency campaign Anybody Can Serve…So Let’s Conserve, focused on putting America’s energy future in the hands of the people who matter the most – the American people.

“Everyone can do their part to save on energy costs,” said PSC Chairman Robert Clayton. “By taking a few simple steps, you can make a difference. Small steps taken now could make a big difference in the future.”

This initiative officially begins on Monday, January 19, 2009 as part of the National Day of Utility Service, celebrated in recognition of the spirit of service to self and community often promoted on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.  Clayton said Dr. King inspired others and once said  “Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve.”

Clayton noted the national campaign is in addition to the Be Energy Efficient initiative coordinated by the Missouri Public Service Commission and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The PSC encourages customers to work to reduce their energy consumption.  Here are some points to consider:

  • Replace furnace filters each month when dirty.
  • Make sure vents are not blocked by furniture or drapes.
  • Turn off lights not being used.
  • Turn down the temperature on the water heater to 120 degrees.
  • Let sunlight into your home during the winter and keep it out in the summer.
  • Wear extra layers of clothing or blankets in the winter.
  • Place weather stripping around doors and windows to keep heat from escaping.

Other energy saving tips can be found on the website www.beenergyefficient.org which provides no-cost, low-cost and long-term savings actions for Missourians to consider.
